The Most Important Skill for Success in Life and Work (You Have It!)

I believe the most important life and work skill of all is something anyone can learn… and better yet, you have already learned it, but likely don’t know it. That skill is: an attitude of “I can figure it out.”

That attitude is the key to facing all the uncertainty or change you’re facing. And there’s so much uncertainty and change that it can be overwhelming and you can forget that you’ve done this before.

You’re already good at figuring things out! Yes, you.

Our stressed brains often get stuck with “I don’t know how.” And it can stop us in our tracks.
Even though you have been figuring things out your whole life without knowing how at first.

Your brain thinks you need certainty first, or that you should just “poof” know the answer before starting. But you never have had certainty.

Instead of waiting “to just know”:

Look for best guesses, take small steps in that direction, and figure it out as you go. The motion sensor lights will come on as you go. 💡

To help activate your figure-it-out confidence:

To activate this “I can figure it out” superpower more easily, own it. Know that’s in you and act from it.

This simple exercise will help you claim this superpower inside you.

  1. Name 3 times you have figured it out when you were nervous about something.
  2. Right after making that list, think about whatever is feeling daunting right now and remind yourself, “I can figure it out as I go.” See how that feels.

#1 tip for figuring anything out:

Part of “figuring it out” is often about letting in help so you’re not reinventing the wheel.

Letting in help might be the muscle that needs a bit of attention.
Your confidence and capacity soars in community.

No one does everything alone. Life is a team effort, and it gets easier when you allow the team to do their thing.

OK, OK, I know you’ve got an independent streak that wants to do it alone. Me too! This really got in my way for too long.

I finally learned that the “lone wolf” idea is a recipe for stuckness and aggravation. Even wolves live in packs.

Are you a solopreneur and wonder how that community thing works for you? You get to have a team too. Check out these career and business groups especially for introverted or highly sensitive people.

Bottom Line

  1. You already know how to figure things out. Don’t let “I don’t know” get in your way.
  2. Letting in support is often the best way to figure things out. It’s much easier, and usually more fun. No need to reinvent the wheel.
